Question on seeing shots taken from camera as X1.5?

I own Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H2. When viewing shots I just taken and using theT(telephoto) on camer as opposed to W(wide)it shows the shot starting at X1.1, then X1.2., X1.3, X1.5, X2.0 up to X5.0 Can't find in manual what this signifies. If most digital cameras have this, can I correlate one of these figures into how well an 8X10 or 11X14 print would come out?

Okay, I found the right answer for you, but I may as well leave the wrong answer that I wrote in case it gives you some insight into something else...

Here's the right answer. I overlooked the part where you said, "When viewing shots..." This just tells you at what magnification you are viewing the image. It does not relate to image quality at all.

From http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonyh2/p...
"Pressing the right (tele) zoom key allows you to magnify images up to 5x. You can also scroll around magnified images using the four-way controller."

Okay, here's my wrong answer, but it might help you in another area anyhow, so I'll go ahead and post it.

On my Canon, when it starts displaying "X" values, it means that it has skipped over to digital zoom. This is the digital value only, as it won't do that until the optical zoom has maxed out. So if you see 1.2X it would mean that you are actually at the 14.4X power, since you max out at 12X.

One place on dpreview says that you max out at 2X digital zoom and another seems to say that you max out at a total of 52X, but that cuts you down to VGA resolution. This is a no-no for quality enlargements. Maybe the first chart means you have full sized images at 2X digital zoom and then it begins to shrink. That sort of makes sense to me.
Of course, you know that you are not getting the best quality in digital zoom. You may even want to lock it out on your menu, considering your quest for quality.

Back in college, I did teach a handful of friends the mechanics of photography. :-) That was (gasp) almost 40 years ago. Things have changed! And the info didn't cost you $3.99, either. (haha) Report It

Here's the manual, it costs $3.99 though

ummmm hummmm
