Putting an auto camera on manual..?

I have a camera thats set on auto.. this is one thats not digital. I need to know if i should push this button that has a P on it and above says mode.. but i really dont know what to do. I forgot how to and i would like to try and set the shutter speed myself but i cant cause its on auto.. please help. Thanks

It would really really help if I knew what camcorder you are talking about.
