Should I use a card reader to upload photos?

My computer WILL NOT recognize the camera I just bought by plugging it in to the USB port. I've looked for hours thoroughly in the instruction manuals, and nothing helps whatsoever.

So, to avoid further frustration, should I buy one of these supposed "card readers"? How exactly to they hook up and work? Cost?

Hi,
I would recommend getting a card reader. They come in external or internal types. The external ones simply use a USB port to plug into. I assume you are running Win XP, in which case it will automatically install when you plug it in. The internal ones look neater and go in a 3.5 inch drive bay. They connect onto the motherbaords spare USB header. Try to get a 52 in 1 reader, they are quite cheap these days and that will handle up to 52 types of card formats, more than you will ever need! I've done this with my own camera and it's much better than loading all the camera drivers, plus the card - depending on the size you buy, usually holds much more than the camera internal memory.

My friend if you are having problems with drivers for your camera, well, the card reader thing is the best option.

They are a little bigger than a credit card and probably about a half an inch thick. Their prices range from as cheap as 3-5 bucks external to 20-30 bucks internal, you've got choices.

Careful when using SD cards, do not bend them, they are very fragile.

Good luck!
