IEEE 1394 connection help?

I have a Sony DCR-HC30 digital camcorder and I'm trying to download the tape into my Laptop ("HP Pavilion dv8315nr, windows xp") with a Sony I link IEEE1394. Soon as i plug in the cable it will recognize the camera and when I open any editing software i.e. Pinnacle, windows movie maker, muvee or DV Capture...the software freezes up. (I have my camera on Play/Edit btw). Please if someone can walk me trough to solve this problem. Than you

the software will control the camera you just need to turn it on and put it in computer interface mode. Do not hit play or any of the buttons on the camcorder. Let the software do the work. You can forward, rewind, play and record with the video software. You need to make sure that your hard drive is clean and defragmented. You need to kill, stop, disable all unneeded processes running in background. Virus scanners, firewall, admin tools, schedulers, monitors, anything and everything that you can. Bring up TaskManager and end all processes that you can from there. Those that you cannot do from there, do so from Administrator Tools -> Services.
You need to have lots of DRAM (physical memory) Upgrade now. Get to at least 1GB. You should look for a very fast external drive for storage but not USB, suggest firewire but do not capture to this drive. You need to clean and defrag your c: drive before you try and capture.
Freezing is a problem with your system resources and not your install of your camcorder. Get the latest drivers for your HP. Look for a new chipset driver or firewire driver.

You cannot have too much memory for Video work. You cannot have too much hard drive space. You cannot have too fast of a computer for Video work.

If all else fails get a faster laptop or better yet a desktop for video editing, and don't skimp on firewire external hard drives.

I'm using a brand new Hp laptop with 1BG of Ram. I was told that the Fire-Wire cable works with only with Window XP SP1. I guess no one has the wright answer. I probably have to take it to a technician. I don't know how people can vote the best answer if my question was not answered? :) Report It

Video editing software because of the size of video files is a huge resource hog. Make sure you exit all other programs before you fire up your video editor. If you have a slow processor - less than 1 GHz - and less than 512 Mb of RAM you're going to have problems because your laptop's little silicon paws won't be able to keep up. Also make sure to check that your laptop is configured so that all hardware, etc. is powered on. The power saving options on some laptops turn things off at very inappropriate times.

Try loading the software first and then connect the camera. If this dont help unistall all software and install Roxio media suite.
