Hi.
I believe that my USB ports may not be working. I can no longer get my printer to work (altho I have tested it, it still works but I can't get my computer to recongnize that the printer is plugged in), also my computer doesn't seem to recongnize that I have plugged in my digital camera.
Is this normal for USB ports to wear out? Could it be a software prob? Any suggestions or testing I can run myself?
I am still running Windows 98.
I thank everyone who answers in advance. Thanks! ok,, cool, just go to bios and enable the USB ports.
if this doesn't help..follow these instructions carefully:
1> throw your PC away.
2> get a life.
3> contact me, I think you are pretty. Hi mustanggrrrl,
It is unusual for USB ports to go bad.
I am kind of rusty on Windows 98 but try changing the port you are plugging your devices into, reverse them or find another port (there are more then one on your computer). Now power off the computer and the printer. Power up the computer and after it finishes booting turn on the printer. Windows should detect it now.
I think that will work for you.
Norm If your computer has an AMD CPU, and Viatech USB Host Controllers; changing the USB Host Controller drivers to standard or generic drivers, may work You have whats known as an I/O conflict. All you have to do is go into your device manager and re-assign a port com to the usb port that you want to use, There are typically port numbers anywhere from 1 to 8 if memory serves me, but there is also another method.
You can pick a device that you think that is least important to you and remove it from your add & remove programs manager, then install the device that you really want the most first, then the others after that until the problem starts again.
And finally, the easiest thing to do is maybe try and buy a usb 2.0 plug and play port Hub.. This is the one that I would do if I didn't know how to re-assign port numbers to stop an I/O conflict. Hope this helps. Contact the computer manufacturer and or try Microsoft support. This sound quite abnormal. Good luck. you should enable the USB ports from the BIOS i suggest that you remove all usb connections and re-insert one by one interchanging the ones you removed... if this does not work, the re-install the printer by first un-installing it and then restart the pc, shut down and restart again then connect the usb for the printer..it will work... thank me after it does. one more suggestion.... up grade to xp or vista |
