Anyone recommend good video editing software?

I bought a digital video camera (the kind that has mini tapes but can hook up to a computer with a firewire cable). I tried transfering to the computer with Windows Movie Maker, but the quality (resolution) was horrible. I want to transfer high quality videos (I have a big hard drive so space is not an issue) to the computer and do some basic editing, just deleting sections and combining clips into one longer clip, then I want to burn the videos to DVD's.

Please recommend software and include price and where I can get it if you have the info. Thanks
