i just bought a cannon sd600 digital camera.. the manual says i need to install the software before connecting the camera, but i dont want to have a bunch of software on my pc that i dont even use... i alreadey have photo editing software and i know how to transfer the pictures... I have not installed any camera-specific software on my computer for years.
If you get a card reader, no additional software is necessary. This is not only faster, but it saves your camera batteries. Your computer or printer may even have a card reader built into it. I have enough USB ports that I just leave it plugged in all the time.
First of all, be sure there are some pictures on the card. Plug the card reader into an open USB port. Plug the card into the appropriate slot on your card reader. I use Photoshop Elements and as soon as I plug my card into the reader, it starts its own card reader and displays a thumbnail of every picture on the card.
If this does not happen automatically, open your photo editing software. Do whatever you usually do to open a file, but click on the selector where you can change drives. Your card reader will be assigned a new drive name that will be one letter higher than you ever saw before, such as "Drive G:" or such. Then, just double click on the name of the file you want to open and it will appear in your photo editor. You don't need to install it, your computer has its own transfer software if you needed it you would install it rabitt is right if it works cool I just got the SD700is and, didn't install the software, Windows recognized the camera and knew how to handle it.
But then, I had about a 150meg size movie and my machine crashed. I installed the software (the same probably came with your camera) and, found a really cool feature called photostitch, it works smooth, great! Other than that, I did it just to transfer the movies... the ZoomBrowser.exe will let you edit with an external program. You have to find the path and set it once... maybe even a bunch like, PAINT too!
I think you'll get used to the ZoomBrowser, it has some nice features. I recommend installing it.
BTW, I have a photo-editor that came with my printer. The ZoomBrowser isn't really an editor but is good for viewing the images as there is an option to display the histogram- ISO, shutter speed, etc, and other camera settings that I find important to see why some photos turned out good and others didn't. yeah you can go ahead with out installing the software. that's what i do.. but once i did it and when i plugged the usb in , windows got corrupted and froze every time.. i had to do a factory restore on the computer... so it's up to you.. but most of the time windows nows howw to handle.. if it's windows xp - plug and play- you should not have nay problems. |
