Should I look for LOW number Digital Zoom? Since Optical is better??

I have been researching digital cameras and im starting to understand it better. Higher optical number is better bc its better quality picture and zoom, digital works like computer software and isnt best quality when trying to zoom in. so when i look at cameras with high optical i find they have high digital numbers as well?? Shouldnt I be looking for a camera with LOW digital, so it doesnt defeat the purpose of my HIGH optical zoom??? i hope that makes sense. one store guy told me it didnt matter but i want to make sure.

Just ignore the digital zoom in the specs - most digital camera have an option to disable the digital zoom.

He's right, it doesn't matter. The camera will always max out its optical zoom before it starts to use digital zoom. With both high optical and digital zoom, you can zoom really, really far!

I agree with Chuckie. Ignore it completely. Having a low number for digital zoom does not indicate any improvement in quality of the optical zoom.
