Digital camera (DVR) photo recovery question?

Our mini disk DVR is saying "Error 13" and won't let us view our Disney pictures. I have heard of companies that say they can recover them but they charge around $60. And I also have heard of some software that you can buy that is also big bucks. Has anyone else had this problem and or used one of these services? Help Please! Thanks!
