i want to record my guitar playing to my computer so i can upload it to youtube, but the built in camera/video recorder in my computer has a annoying effect (whenever i record me playing through my amp and the computer records the sound w/ the internal mic it doesn't record that well).
i want to make a good quality video, the visual recording is decent but i want to have a nice quality sound w/ the vid. what can i get to record music to my computer, i only have $150 to spend too.. um i was looking up some stuff on guitarcenter.com and i came across a "mixer" what is a mixer and can i use it to directly record from my guitar to my computer? i also came across "software", so what do i really need to get to record my music in high quality to my computer? What you need is an audio interface and recording software. The two usually go together.
Working with a $150 budget is doable, but not going to get you the best stuff. It's more than enough though, to get a respectable quality recording uploaded to youtube though.
On a sidenote, a mixer, is well a mixer. It mixes different input signals and combines them to an output signal. So a mixer is used to plug a band into a PA system. A mixer is also used in recording studios when you want to do multi-track recording, like for a band. There's other uses on a mixer other than the ones I listed. You might be interested in getting a mixer, when either (a) you get a band or (b) you start playing multiple instruments. For right now, you don't need one.
Okay so here are your suggestions for recording:
M-Audio Fast Track $99

This has two inputs. One for the Mic and one for the guitar. It comes with a version of Pro Tools. A very cheap version of Pro Tools. The full Pro Tools cost about $300 I believe. So you can imagine what you are getting. But still it will allow you to record and export. It just doesn't have all of the mastering, editing, and effects that it offers in the full version. This should be plenty for what you are doing.
Presonus AudioBox $149

Here's a good one. It's got two mic / instrument inputs. The one above is specifically one mic and one instrument. With this one you can do two mics or two instruments or one of each. It's nice to have options. You don't know what the future holds. This gives you Cubase LE as well. The recording software is great. Easy to use and has plent of mixing , editing, and mastering options.
Tapco Link $149

Here's the one I recommend. Tapco is from the same guy who created Mackie. So these cheap products are usually very good quality for the price, because it has the Mackie mind behind it. Also this comes with Tracktion which is by far the easiest software to use.
Okay. So let me explain recording softwares to you. The big names are Cubase, Pro Tools, and Tracktion. Pro Tools is very popular, and is used in many professional studios and so is Cubase. But you have to remember that the recording software lets you record, edit, mix, add effects, and master. That is a lot of stuff. Recording is a lot more complex than hitting the record button. You will learn this as you get time on it. This is why I recommend the 3rd option, the Tapco. It may not be the BEST, but it is the easiest to learn on. Tracktion is very user friendly and it can teach you how to mix, edit, and master very easily. Which will really boost your recording qualities up.
