USB Ports?

My computer seems to have stopped detecting that it has any USB ports. I cannot install my printer, digital camera, or external hard drive. Windows displays a screen which shows green arrows against all the components required by the software I am trying to install except USB which shows a red cross. Installation stops. I have tried rebooting, switching off at the main switch, uninstalling anti-virus software - all to no avail. These items used to be installed but since having virus trouble I have not been able to re-install. Can anyone help with a solution, please?

this seems to be a common problem lately and no one can seem to find out why
initially the best solution is to uninstall the usb devices that are not working and allow windows to re-recognize them after a restart
to do this you need to remove all the drivers for the devices and then go into device manager and expand the usb entry and then right click each usb entry and select "uninstall",you will be prompted wether you wish to continue the uninstall..just click yes and restart your p.c
upon restart you will see all your usb devices and ports recognized by windows,and they will all be installed again
then its a case of going through each device(digital camera,printer,external hard drive) and install each driver/software for each device
the best way to do this is install each devices software and drivers and when all the devices drivers/software are installed then plug each device in one by one
as each device is plugged in it will locate its drivers and configure itself to windows
this is better than plugging the devices in and then installing the drivers and software,as theres more chance something will go wrong that way
another option is to remove all devices and the software as shown above>then do a system restore as far back as possible>then reinstall software and drivers and then plug in the hardware...this is the same as the above method but requires a system restore

The reason for USB ports to not be detected by windows, usually happens when an update that has not installed properly, check the BIOS settings for your USB 2.0 make sure that they are enabled.

You may also want to see if the driver for the USB is installed correctly, you will need the disk that came with your computers motherboard or the motherboard make and modle to download new drivers for that board..

try to restart the usb port hubs.
go to the taskbar (usualy along the bottom) press start > right click my computer and on the drop down menu select manage. > this should then open a new window. on this window go to device manager on the side panel under device manger in the left side panel (on vista H.P.). >
go down the list of computer hardware componants till you find the one labled " Universal Serial Bus Controllers." and expand it. > then if any of the items in this subsection have a little "!" mark by them. > right click > on the drop down go to properties > click on the driver tab in the new window. > select disable, wait a few moments , then enable when it allows you to do so.> click ok.

you can either reboot and start from there or try just to do what you wanted to do.

Try going into the system BIOS and see if the ports are disabled or something

Start your computer and before windows loads...keep tapping F8 (varies depending on manafacturer)

I would say go into Driver Manager and make sure they are enabled. If you have done this, then try either looking for the updates drivers form the motherboard. If the USB ports are not on the motherboard then again, try finding the updates drivers.

This happened to me and the above didn't work because my motherboard company was outdated, so I choose a USB port that DID WORK and plugged in a USB extension.

Go into the bios to see if the usb ports are enabled and not disabled mate.

go to device manager and RIGHT click on the ports and look at the options
