Mobile phone camera vs digital camera?

okay i am the happy owner of a nokia n95, i also own a kodak M863.

nokia n95= 5mp
kodak M863 = 8.1mp

i just took a photo of my garden and both photos were very good however

the file sizes...

nokia n95 = 1.65mb
kodak M863 = 1.35mb

but hang on! the kodak image is supposed to be far higher quality! both the photos look the same, the digi camera ones being slightly more colourful, thats all. I know the cameras use compressing software but surely the n95 is giving me more quality in my photos.

kodak M863 = VGA 15fps

Its all about compression NOT quality. Thats why size is so much smaller.
Try this, put them both into the same image editing software ie paint shop pro and re-save them both as jpg using that - it will therefore compress them both to the softwares standards and you should see the difference

In addition, lenses are VERY important, the kodak lense will be miles better than the nokia - although you may not notice this difference due to the already pretty high standards of the phones camera

Not to forget the camera is a camera, and in that it will have more camera based features (think that makes sense)

The Kodak camera will have a much wider range of options such as 'shutter speed', ISO Levels, etc and will give better quality of image (this will be more evident when the image is printed, especially at large sizes).

As for the file sizes, there are different ways of compressing an image - just because the file is larger doesn't automatically mean that it's a better picture...

depends on the megapixels.
a digital camera would be a better choice..coz mobile phones are not ideal photo cathers..cameras a better..buy a nikkon 7 pix or a canon or a sony cybershot..another thing is..that cameras dont get outdated quickly...u can still show it off for 1-2 years..new mobile phones come every month..

yes you have. in order for the camera to be better, you must have a very high end one. that seems no offence but it seems to be a cheaper one.

Are you sure the camera is set to 8.1MP - they can be set to anything from VGA to 8.1MP
