What would be a good lens to use in a low light situation for sports photography?

I鈥檓 taking pictures of volleyball & basketball inside gyms and indoor Horsing events like English ridding. I have a Canon D30 digital body and am looking for a good lens to add to my arsenal. Thanks for any help given.

The 70-200 f 2.8 or the Image Stabilizer version of the same lens would be very good choices. The unstabilized version is about $1100, the IS version around $2000. If you have a steady hand and good technique, you'll be fine with the non-IS version. Lighting inside gyms usually stinks, so you really need all the lens speed you can afford. I don't know about the riding events, but I would guess lighting isn't great there, either.

If the Canon lenses are just too pricey, look at similar lenses from Tamron and Tokina. Other makers may have similar models. They don't have stabilization, but you can get similar lens speed for around $700. I've used Tamron lenses and found them to be very good. I have no experience with Tokina, but have heard good reports from folks who own them. Source(s): Photo hobbyist with experience in motor racing and outdoor sports
The Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 seems like the obvious choice. Is it too expensive? The wrong range? Not fast enough? Please add some details.
