How does one adjust f-stop on the Canon Digital Rebel?

I am new to photography and got the Rebel because of all the great reviews. I see people talking about stopping down all the time but can't find a detailed description of how to do it with the Rebel. I have read all about f-stop just can't figure out how to adjust it with the Rebel

Press the button where naturally your thumb should be while holding the camera to take a picture, keep it pressed, turn the dial and watch the numbers change.
