I am very much intrested in Photography. So I am thinking of buying a new SLR digital camera. Please advice?

want a good featured cam with good zoom lens

I agree with the responses above that the Canon 350D (a.k.a. Rebel XT) would be a great place to start. An alternative would be the (slightly less expensive) Nikon D50. You can get either of those with an 18-55mm lens for under $750. Include a 1GB memory card and a cheap second lens in the 70-200mm range, and you're set for around $1000.
If your budget is over $1000, you could invest in more or better quality lenses, an external flash (the 350D and the D50 both have a pop-up flash), a tripod, a camera bag, more memory cards, and so forth. This hobby can be as expensive as you want it to be :-)
Just remember to always upgrade your lenses before upgrading the body: a cheap body with great lenses will take better pictures than a professional body with cheap glass.
Try the Canon Digital Rebel. It comes with an 18-35mm zoom lens that's pretty good for amateurs. As a professional photographer, I use the Digital Rebel as my second camera. It's also easy to use with less features for an SLR. Yet, it matches the megapixels of the 20D. It shoots in RAW format and shoots 4 frames per second.

Lastly, it's cheap for an SLR. And you can move up from there. But the Canon Digital Rebel is a great place to start.
This depends entirely on how much you want to spend on the camera. If you want a good, basic digital SLR, you can go with a Canon Rebel, which will provide you with a basic experience to deal with in an SLR setting. Canon EOS-line cameras will provide a very good, more professional photographic line.

Then again, if you have the funds, there's always Nikon, whose cameras and lenses are excellent.

However, when you get into SLR cameras, then you have to buy the camera body and lens separately, for the most part. Some of the lenses can be as expensive as the camera body, depending on the type.

Hope this helped!
Welcome to the Photography World!!!! If you are thinking of buying a digital camera, the best brand to go with is Canon. I personally don't have one (I use dark age technology-film) but I have heard that Canons are excellent to use. The one I would go with is Canon EOS 30D Digital SLR. You can get any lens for it, and while they are not cheap, they are definately worth it. Most of them (and lenses) come with a lifetime warranty so should something happen. Nikons are good as well, and Pentax. Good luck and happy taking!

try a LEICA camera (for pro) or a Pentax (for beginers)!
