I'm trying to purchase a tripod for my photography class...something in the mid range for Canon digital rebel.

slik 40 & up on amazon.a teriffic light tripod, originator of those quick release leg locks.
wal-mart sells a nice medium weight tripod for camers with a universal mount. Its in the 30.00 dollar range.
My Mom has the newest Canon on the market. The one with the huge flash and zoom lenses. I think it is an EOX But I am not for sure. I do know that the Wolf and Ritz camera stores sell them. I got my mom's tripod and monopod there. They are kinda of expensive but they are under warranty.
I own a Slik brand tripod and love it. I only wish I had the one with flip levers for the quick release legs instead of the big know screws. You want something that is a little heavier so that camera shake is not a problem. Don't get one of those cheap velbon types from wal-mart or target.

There are hundreds of different types of tri-pods for photography alone. It depends on how and where you are going to be using it. Judging from the camera you bought I would guess you want one for general use. Beware, don't purchase a tri-pod with a video head thinking you can use it for both, video heads are much different and are very hard to use with photography! Most tri-pods I have seen at discount stores are very low quality and not very steady and many of these are designed for video not photography. Visit a good photography store, one that professional photographers in your area use. They will have a large selection of tri-pods that you can put your hands on and see how they work. Bring your camera set it up and try several out there in the store. If you will also want to use it for video then you can purchase a second video head that you can change out to when you are doing video. I use Bogen, they sell great tri-pods and heads, however there are many other brands that make great tri-pods. Choose one that is resonable tall and is stable when set up with your camera on it, but light enough that you will carry it with you and use it. It should be of sturdy construction, have sturdy locks on the legs, fold in to a small enough size. There will be times when you want to set up and it my be a little windy, if you choose a good lightweight tri-pod you will be able tie a small sandbag to the center of the legs where they meet and make it much more stable. This trick is used by lots of professionals. You will probably have to spend at least a hundred dollars to get a good tri-pod.
