I am a novice in photography. Are the manual control and shutter control in a digital camera essential for me?

I am planning to buy Canon SD700 IS, as i travel often and i take photos in tourist centres. But i got to know that full manual control and shutter control are available only in Canon A series like A640 but these A series cameras are larger. Actually i am confused if these manual control and shutter control are necessary for a novice like me?

no they are not
keep it on auto
i HAVE A CANON POWERSHOT SE 6 PIXELS. THE SPEED AND SHUTTER CONTROLS ARE AUTOMATIC UNLESS YOU WISH TO OVERRIDE THEM. A LOT OF PROFESSIONAL USE THIS AS A SECOND CAMERA.
I would say no. I have an Olympus 5060 with full manual controls and full auto program. I played with the manual controls when it was new and now wished I bought a smaller camera. Unless you plan to pursue photography as a career, my opinion is that you will never need the manual controls. I am even surprised at what some cameras on cell phones can do and they have no manual controls.
For a total novice, no, you don't need those options. If you don't (at this stage) want to learn about selecting your own shutter speed or aperture value, then the SD700IS is perfectly fine.
I bought one late last year, fully knowing that it didn't have full manual controls. I mainly wanted it as my take anywhere camera, so I knew I would have to do without those features.
But, I have to tell you that I DO miss the full manual controls...which is what I am used to on my other Canon camera.
Anyway, if you just want point & shoot simplicity, then the SD700 IS would be perfect.
It's a great little camera...it looks very stylish and works great.
You will love it...
Just make sure you buy a fast SD card to go with it (Sandisk Extreme III) is excellent...and will help the camera to operate very smoothly and very fast.
