That depends on your budget.

Decent digital SLRs are still in the $900 "on sale" and up range. However, my 25 year old 35mm camera (that probably would cost $400 to replace with something equivalent now), and a scanner for my computer to convert the film images to digital, can still outperform the digital SLR cameras in the above mentioned $900 range. Needless to say I'm still using a 35mm camera for my "serious hobby" photography. However, digital SLR prices are expected to drop in the next year or so to be competitive with film SLRs.

If your budget isn't in the $900-and-up range and you still want most of the SLR features, I might suggest getting a "SLR-look-alike" that has a lot of mega-pixels but lacking the interchangeable lens. Kodak makes some of these, as do others. Make sure the camera has a "macro" mode for close up photos of flowers, insects, and other small items.

Consider also getting a point-and-shoot with a decent zoom lens, too. They're nice for everyday use, where you want to make decent pictures and still not have a big unit for travel.
Kodak, Sony, NOWAY! they don't make SLR's...you will need an SLR for a serious hobby, & Canon makes the best...contact me if you would like to see some of my samples please...Nikon is a good second, & then it would have to be Fuji, a far distant 3rd...
Try to compare and read some reviews of digital camera before you buy one. But, before that, specify first what field of photography you want to get into. That, way you can finally decide what accessories, additional stuffs that you can use in doing photography. CANON and NIKON is a good name to compare. look at the pros and cons.
check thi site for further info about digital photography. www.dpreview.com
if you are looking for professional photography,i would strongly recommend this two professional photographer manufacturer which is Canon or Olympus which offer the best quality and at the most competitive prices. For me,olympus would be better than Canon for professional camera whereby Canon is more to amateur camera.
Use the magazines, compare features - Nobody can say what is best for you!

Some makes have features that are better, but then stand out poorer in other fields!

If you are just starting out, get a good SLR-style camera (often called a bridge-camera) which has 'noddy mode' (Point & Press), but also has the flexibility for selecting Shutter and Aperture priority, etc, just like a non-digital SLR.

Cannon are pretty good, so are Nikon, but I've found Fuji to be great value for money!.... Look up Finepix S5500, S7000, or the new S9500.... all great cameras for starting out with, as they cater also for the semi-pro!
I can second the suggestion to check out dpreview. They have great reviews, comparison charts, and busy forums on all brands.

Canon is the most popular professional brand by a mile. They have the best there is for sports and low light photography. For general photography, you may find that other brands have equal/ better options.

I went with Nikon because right now they have the best digital body for under $2000. (Canon and Nikon leap frog each other in the semi-pro and consumer price range.) Nikon also has all the professional quality lenses I could ever want.
