What would one recommend I do in order to improve my photography (Digital SLR)? Go to your local library. In addition to the numerous books on composition, lighting and technique, there will be LOTS of books by master photographers and photojournalists. Study them intensely. Then try to replicate certain lighting situations or subjects. Don't worry about copying others work - "amateurs borrow, professionals steal." Any honest artist will tell you they've copped ideas and more from artists they admire. It's one of the best ways to learn photography. Also, be very critical of your work. Look at your shots (even your best ... ESPECIALLY your best) and ask yourself how you could have made it a better photo. And remember the sage advice of Henri Cartier-Bresson - "Your first 10,000 shots are your worst." take a lot of pictures of EVERYTHING. no matter the subject or the lighting. then learn from those pictures. One add-on that can really make your photographs look more professional is using filters. There are different styles for different brands, as well as a few that work with all brands. They can really make some of your photographs look more impressive- especially outdoor scenes, where they can make cloudy days look bright and sunny with blue skies. I would also suggest going to photography classes at a community college or something, or else looking at notice boards and forums on photography websites. The online classes are usually pretty basic, so I wouldn't suggest doing any of those. Another good idea is to try photo competition- they have quite few of them online. Every month or week they have a new topic that you must represent in a photograph, and i think its a good way to broaden your range and try new subjects you wouldn't normally do. Another idea is to try to replicate some photos you really like- you Can learn some new techniques that way. Good luck. There are several things you can do to improve your photography... Understand fully how your camera works and learn how to use all it's controls and features...and when to use them. Learn the basics of photography (aperture, shutter speed, exposure, metering, composition etc). Read about photography and techniques via magazines, books and webpages. Take an advanced photography course. Get plenty of practise. good luck... Read a lot of photography books and magazine, look at a lot of good photographs and see why reviewers say they are good. Find out how they were made and go and do likewise I have a flickr account, and it has really helped me! You can load up your pictures and join different groups to have people look at your pictures and then they tell you what they think of your pictures. A lot of times you can get very constructive advice. You can also look at a ton of other pictures that others have taken. I think it helps just to look at other photos to see what other people have done. It also helps to give very creative ideas for photos! Good Luck! |
