I need a new computer and help deciding what kind-I'm a pro photog. and will use it with digital photography.

Needs to be a lap top

The combination of an Apple (all new Apple's run PC software better than PC hardware, if you must use Windows) and the new Aperture software is used by many professionals I know. I have used both systems also and Apple is superior. It's difficult to change systems if you're used to Windows, but if you are starting from scratch, Apple is great. And if you do need to run old Windows software, you can. But you won't want to if you start with Apple Aperture.
hehe no idea
The best computer you can purchase for digital photography or anything regarding video, audio, pictures, is an Apple computer. They are the leaders in this field and have been years ahead of their time when it comes to this technology. Ok you may have to spend a bit more money for these systems but they are reliable and hardly ever have problems compared to a pentium or amd processor computer. You will never have any regrets if you purchase an apple computer.
My friend is a pro photog. and in the past has allways used every day computers for his digital photo's but has recently purchased an apple computer and kicks himself in the butt for not having done so a long time ago.
I'm a pro and I will respectfully disagree with the comment regarding macs. While Apple makes some amazing stuff, there is more to consider, especially if you are running a business. Your probably fine with either a Mac or PC (I use a PC) but I think there are some general objectives you want to follow:

-- Get as much hard drive space as you can afford - even though you can use external drives, photo processing requires lots of hard disk space for things like scratch disks and storing photos. A 250 gig hard drive or more will be helpful

-- Max out on RAM. 2 gigs at least. If you cut corners here, you will regret it ever time you work on a photo.

-- USB and firewire ports are also important. Whether adding an external drive or hooking up your camera (for example, my EOS 1D MK 1 needs to be tethered to the PC if I want to change some of the settings)

-- A DVD and CD burner will also be a nice to have item. You never know when you will want to make a CD, DVD or use them for backup.

There are laptops that will do all of the above. If you're going to use it on the road, you will also want to get one that is more rugged (my choice here would be the offerings from Lenovo - the former IBM PC company - which are built like tanks). Based on your budget, go for the max RAM and HD and then fill in the other stuff around there. Also keep in mind to budget for software (between photoshop CS and add ins, you can easily spend 2K alone on software). Good luck!
pro level photo software seems to be much more prolific on the mac than the pc. windows has made great strides in their graphics handling capabilities but still pale in comparison to the mac.
aperture is a wonderful organizing and color correction software package. used in conjunction with photoshop you will almost eveything you need for management and production of your photos.
i disagree with some of the earlier comments about what you need in a laptop. while you do want to max out on RAM (mac OSX and apple software are notorious memory hogs) there is not too much advantage in getting a massive hard drive. raw images and photoshop files take up an enormous amount of space and no matter how big your hard drive you will run out of space quickly. you're better off getting and hd around 160mb and using external firewire, usb or network drives for storing your photos.
keep in mind that cpu's use your hd's extra space to improve performance. use the internal hd for installing software only and the external for all your photo files.
when visiting prospective clients for demos you will likely not need your entire collection to show them. so you can use a variety of 'pocket' drives that have more than enough space for you to show your porfolio. pocket drives are cheap, small, readily available, and go anywhere from 5gb up to 250gb and beyond.
if it needs to be a laptop go with the tricked out macbook pro. big bad processors, maxed out memory (2gb), and a nice grapics card will get you off the ground in no time.
good luck and hope this helps.
