Is the advancement of digital photography scaring the beegeeziss out of professionals? It has to scare them. When a 10 year old kid can pick up a digital camera and take photos and then Photoshop them into great photographs it has to send a shiver down the spines of older photographers who had to study and learn photography the old fashioned hard way. I have been taking photographs since the mid 1970鈥檚 and back then you had to know your stuff about composition, contrast, framing the photo, f-stops, different lens focal lengths, distance to subject, ect. In a few years those little kids will be able to do things that the professionals never thought of. Today almost anyone can take great photographs. I feel that is a good thing. I like to look at good photos. No, I think a lot of pro's are embracing the technology. With digital backs to popular medium format and large format cameras, full digital cam's (Canon EOS-1D or Nikon D100 or D2x as well as Hasselblad 2 and a quarter digital cams) are making it easy for traditional photographers to go to digital. Maybe the old-schoolers who are film purists will have problems but I love digital... It allows for creativity to just soar. Maybe I'm being hopeful but I don't think you need to worry that much. I'm studying photography and am very lucky in that I have fallen into an era where one form seems to be ending and another is taking over. This means that I have been taught in both areas and I have to be honest in saying that without the traditional techniques my digital work would have nothing near the quality it possesses today. There are many valuable traditional lessons to be learnt, whats the point in doing photography if your going to spend hours in front of the computer correcting mistakes that could have been avoided if taken appropriately in the first place. People wont be willing to pay for editing time if they never had to in the first place! Plus if it wasn't for all the cool traditional techniques in the beginning nobody would have been able to make a photoshop tool for them. Don't panic! |
