Photography, Visual Arts, College Major.?

Hello everyone, i love photography and I'm thinking about getting a major in Visual Arts with an emphasis in Photography. but I'm having some doubts because some people say that people that major in photography aren't good and most good photographers have no schooling at all. I'm doing it because i would like to have some documentation in the field that i love. can anyone think or show me and photographers with schooling in that field. I'm looking into Columbia college (Chicago) and Art institute of Chicago. any advice?

They are lying. All successful photographers have some kind of photo education ... whether formal in a photo school like Art Center, Brooks or RIT or by working for a photographer as an assistant.

Believing you can be a great photographer by buying a certain camera is like believing you can fly an airplane by buying the right one without any flight training.

The key to being successful is knowing exactly how to shoot perfect images every time under any lighting conditions and doing it consistently

If you taugh yourself maths would you learn faster and better than having people that already know it teach you? If you want to be a photographer take the opportunity and learn from others that teach photrography. Self taught or schooled there are many great average and poor shooters its individual.
