How to be good at photography?

I'm really interested in photography and I love to take pictures. But I'm confused on what to take pictures of, I like taking pictures of scenery/flowers/outdoors but what exactly.. you can only have so many pictures of flowers. And I can't exactly travel the world and take pictures of the Eiffel tower. But my question is, what should I take pictures of?...

Take pictures for yourself and no one else. If you like what you are looking at then that's what you should take a picture of.

Now if you want to get more into the art of photography then you need to learn composition, color contrasts, depth of field and things like that.

Composition is basically the "rule of thirds". It's more complicated than that, but that's just the beginning. You want to create an imaginary tic-tac-toe board over your image, evenly in thirds, and the point of interest should line up right on a crossing point of the grid. This gif explains it well:

Color contrast is knowing which colors naturally look appealing next to each other. Blue & yellow, purple & gree, etc.

Depth of field is basically how blurry the background is in a photograph. This is controlled by your aperture or f stop or f number(all the same thing, just different names). The lower the number, the more blurry it will be.

There is a lot more to it than just these 3 things but these are some basics to get you in the right direction.

You are not alone, every artist that I have known faces this very question from time to time in their life. You are in good company. Visual artists, painters, sculptors, photographers, etc., receive inspiration from different places. What you take pictures of is, or can be up to you. Or you can take a class and the teacher gives assignments and you are invited to take pictures to complete the assignment. I have found that inspiration can come from almost anywhere, but I need to open or accepting of it when it presents itself. Without telling you what to photograph, a worthwhile approach might be to go out and look around with your camera and take some photos that relate to a particular thing, like, for example, the color blue and how you see the color blue. See what happens, you may come up with some nice photos or bad ones, it does not matter, the object is to get you un-stuck and taking some photos. Also helpful, I have found especially with photography, is to take a related visual art class, like drawing or sculpture, which forces you to spend much more time in front a subject than taking a photograph does. It also helps you to see in different ways that opens up new possibilities to you.
Hope this is helpful.

You do NOT need to travel the world to get great photos. An amateur always thinks in terms of only being able to take photos of pretty or tourist trap kind of things. Nothing is farther from the truth. There is plenty to shoot all around you. It is all in just seeing it and taking interesting shots of it. I live in a small town where there is little to nothing of "Interest" to take photos of, but I get plenty of shots that have sold in galleries and even been published. Take photos of the common things in life, just do it in a way that is interesting and portrays a mood, That is what the art of photography is. ANYBODY can take photos of flowers or the Eiffel Tower, that has nothing to do with talent, the subject makes most anyones photos look good, Learn to take great photos of the ordinary... then you will be "good at photograhy".

Here are some photos of mine to give you an idea. These are just common things taken with a cheap film camera, but I think you will have to agree they have more mood and effect that a bunch of flower photos.

There many different ways of photographing a flower. Experiment with different angles, try macro shots, try using different apertures.

You can try shooting landscapes, wildlife, birds, people, building architect, still life. Don't limit yourself and most importantly have fun!

As you walk around, try to visualize how something would look through a lens, start looking closer at everything around you. Watch children playing in the park, the expressions that would make wonderful photos, look at colors and shapes. There also many books on the market that can help you 'see' art.

i think the best picture is a random picture something u didnt plan but u think looks nice, people (groups of people), animals, i suggest u try a carnival, i think those pictures would turn out nice b/c of all the movement that goes on, and the lights and people around :]

practise, patience and perseverance.

Don't worry my friend! That's when Adobe Photoshop comes into the picture!

shoot small and always get on the level of your subject. learn about the golden hour
