I want to enter a photography competition and the theme is picnics.?

Can any competent photographers out there suggest any good compositions that I could put together to have a good chance of doing well in this competition??

I'm a complete beginner, but am interested in pursuing this a bit more seriously.

As a beginner....you will have some Challenges like
understanding the Art of Photography and also understanding various aspects like ....light, shutter, indoor and outdoor etc etc.....before the competitions make sure you check out who won previous year's competition and learn why they were chosen as a winner. Also check out other similar competitions.
you can also check out few photography competitions at

Picnic? How about photos of people enjoying themselves.

Make it very casual. Zoom in--and don't do this, "One... twooooooooooo.. threeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.. okay!"

This means don't pose them. Shoot the photos casually. Make sure you can see their faces (don't shoot from behind). The subjects should be someone you know (not some strangers in the park). And do tell them ahead of time.

You may need a model release before it is entered though.
