Picture up loading & sharing and photographers rights?

I take a great many pictures on an old digital camera- I started off with a junque 35mm; regardless, I take pretty good pix for the most part.
The problem is I have shared them with family and even put them on discs for THEIR enjoyment- now, I've got someone who is posting them on webshots as their own and entering other contests with the pix I have taken. No winners yet- that I'm aware of, but this really frosts me. Is there a way to copywrite your own material or do I just stop sharing with this "close" relative??? I never suspected I would need to ask this question. Thanks for your help. Love you!

First off, your photos are copyrighted the moment you take them. They are your photos and no one may use them without your permission. Now the tricky part is proving that they are your photos. On my dSLR, I can add my copyright info to the exif data. If you can do that on your camera, do it. Secondly, I think it's great that you like to share your photos with family. If you want to make discs for people in the future, make sure that you copy photos to a disc at a very low resolution. You can view great photos at 1/10th the original size, but as far as entering contests and such, most places will require that photos be at least a certain resolution. Also, think about putting a watermark on your photos. Something small but in a place in the photo where it can't be cropped out. Lastly, contact the website running the contest and tell them that this is your photo and did not give anyone permission to enter it.
Well since you know them and you have the original image files, if after you ask them to stop stealing your work they continue doing it, you can sue them.

In the future, only send out low res images to them. Keep your originals to yourself.

To really solve the problem, you will have to put your copyright notice on each image you share. This can be done using Photoshop batch features. Once you add the notice to your originals, then any resizing will include this information in the new files. I do this using Adobe's Bridge (it comes with CS2).

If you had any of the Nikon DSLR's you could put this on every image as you shoot it by using the Image Comment feature on those cameras. The notice should say "Copyright 2007, Your Name, All rights reserved"
