Help me understand what I am expressing by locking my hair?

I am conservative by nature, middle aged and a photographer-writer. I'm surrounded by artists, who are deep, free thinking culturally alert folks. However, I work in a high visibility position as a government public information officer. I've always worn my hair long, but am fatigued by combing and cutting and generally fussing with my appearance. I want to free myself from that chore and explore a look and a feeling that has long eluded me. Someone guide me as I transition from the conventional to the unconventional. I have support of my artist friends, but my family and likely office associates will find this makeover unnerving. My identity is not in question, my self esteem is intact. My manner is without change, but my heart and soul is going through a metamorphosis. What will I encounter? What are the risks? Who will understand that every thing must change? No thing and no one remains the same.

Interesting question. If you are asking this question you are not convinced this is the right thing to do and you will have regrets in the end.

My personal opinion is that a decision like that should be left to the person and if you are convicted you will choose the right option. However you must remember that your friends who have locs are artists your position in life is different and carries with it some conformity as you are a government official.

You will face stereotypes and negativity with the locs but It's up to you. I don't feel you want to honestly, change doesn't always have to lead to a complete metamorphosis it can be occur inside without outward manifestations.

You are a smart person follow your heart, you have nothing to prove that you haven't already.
Wow. You're not expressing anything if you need someone to tell you.
I did that before. I felt great and my family and friends didn't mind also.

It somehow helped and made me a better person inside aside from the outside.
You are simply holding onto a part of yourself that is comfortable and predictable. Change is hard for everyone, going from the known to the unknown, the predictable to the unpredictable. I think it would be a great experience for you to go ahead and do what you want as long as you're not running the risk of any professional loss. You will feel happier personally because this is something you want and you crave and it seems perfectly healthy and normal, so why not? Go for it, you won't regret it:)
you dont need to explain yourself to anyone because the person who likes you doesnt need the explanation
sounds like a mid life change, not crisis, and your not comfortable with a hair cut, maybe a bit lazy not in a bad way though, it's a look that will make you fit in with people who are more articulate, and in Ashland Oregon where I live, most people here are into the arts.
This week in the RV park where I live there is a big festival going on and a good 40/50% have dreds; I like dreds, but I feel like I'm in a Zen garden from HELL,
keep the dreds
