Can someone recommend a very decent yet affordable digital camera?

I'm by no means a professional photographer --I know next to nothing about the technical aspects of photography --but I know enough to be disgusted with the pictures the lower-end digital cameras get. I'll be using my camera mainly around the house --we're talking a lot of family pictures and portraits, with occasional outdoor use. I'd like a camera that lets me take a lot of pictures, and quickly. Size and weight isn't so important --quality is. I was pretty happy with the Canon PowerShot A75 I had till now, but now that it's broken, I'm thinking of upgrading. I do want a camera that'll let me take pictures that look professional --does close-ups nicely, handles light nicely, etc, and one that does give me more control over shutter speed, etc.

I would research the Panasonic brand of cameras.
1) they are fairly reasonable in price for features;and also
most of them,if not all use Leica lenses.Which I believe
can still perform better then Japanese lenses.
2) maybe Kodak

First of all, I'm a digital imaging specialist. I specialize in the sale of digital recording equipment such as digital cameras and camcorders and have been doing so for a complete year as of last month, so I know what I'm talking about. Second of all, good choice with the Canon brand. I have two canon's myself and both have held up well. For all that you have mentioned i would personally look into the Canon SD1000. Avg cost is 250. Its canons newest digic processor; shots are crystal clear and turn on/off time is super fast. It offers a multiburst feature, macro mode, depth of field, shutter speed and ISO change abilities. Its pictures are flawless. Check out the reviews. Its a great compact camera.
