Maternity photo shoot?

To start off, I am in intern for an amazing, free-spirited, and down to earth photographer. Tomorrow morning she was booked a maternity photoshoot, (she specializes in pregnancy-teen/family portraits) and wants me to go at it alone. (She did assure permission from the client.) Anyway, she will not be on sight for help/advice. While I've been with her to many, many photoshoots, and have a few under my belt and with working with her, I am quite nervous about this one. I do know the client, which is a plus. But what are some things I could do to prepare or any ideas? or some interesting props/poses. any advice or help would be nice.

For pose and creative lighting/prop ideas, just do a Google image search for maternity portraits and view the work of some other experienced maternity portrait photographers. For starers, you can view my own maternity site for ideas -- http://www.MaternityByLoren.com .

I frequently use a large sheer white cloth for the mom-to-be to strategically wrap to cover whatever they want hidden. Implied nude shots can be very artistic and flattering when combined with dramatic lighting (side or top lit with no fill) and when converted to black & white with slightly higher touch of contrast. When possible, get the father involved in a few poses. Having both parents hands wrapped around the belly is a popular and sweet pose. Having the daddy resting his head on the belly is cute. Kissing the belly works well if an older sibling is also present.

Most of all... try hard NOT to focus on the big belly, which the mom-to-be may already be self-conscious of. Rather, treat it as a glamor portrait session where the model just happens to be pregnant. This will result in a confidence-building series of shots that reassure the subject that she is still beautiful and glowing!

Good luck and have fun!

I have no experience in this department, but I'd like to point you in the direction of some of my favorite photographers and their maternity shoots.

Show lots of belly... if she's comfortable with it then photograph her actual skin!
