Are my prices too high/too low for my photos?

Hi... I have been actively pursuing photography for less than a year. I didn't really feel I was ready to start charging for photos but I have been told by family that I have a "great eye" and have had at least one person request my services and ask for a price list, but I have not charged anyone for services yet. I've been doing family/friends only free of charge (I'm trying to build a credible portfolio).

My prices for prints a la carte are:

5x7 $3.50
8x10 $10.00
Wallets (4): $6
16x20: $30

And I charge $75 for the session (1-2 hrs).

Please advise. I do not call myself an amatuer (because it scares away business) but I am not a licensed photographer and do not call myself that, either.

If you can advise, I'd be so grateful. And please be nice. :)

Your prices are very resonable. I would have your site on your cards to show samples or even samples on the back of your card.
If they are saying it's too expensive, they are chep. I would try locals who are wanting to enter the modeling industry.

Prices are all relative. If you have not been a professional for long than most people charge less to get established and as they get more experience they charge more.

In either case, you want to make sure you are covering your expenses. Also, if you are selling stuff, you have to worry about sales tax and paying taxes on your income. That eats into your profits. If you want to be a working professional you may need a license, liability insurance etc. etc.

Check with yor local government to see what kind of license you would need in your area. Think about - what id someone got hurt while you were taking pictures of them (in your home) they could sue you and your homeowners insurance would not cover it since it was a business.

You business equipment is not covered by your homeowners insurance. If you are using your car for business and you do not have a seperate insurance policy on your car that coverd business you are not covered. etc. etc. etc.

So if you actually decide to start a Photography business - I would say that your prices are very low and you would not make money at those prices.

I was a professional photograper at one point in my life.

Best of luck.
