What is the name of the contemporary American photographer of his Appalachian family?
Perhaps you are thinking of Kenneth Murray of Kingsport Tennessee. I have known Ken for longer than I care to remember. He has published three photographic essays: Down to Earth: People of Appalachia (1981); The American Coal Miner (1980); and Portrait of Appalachia (1985). He has also worked for many of the major news magazines and has taught photography at East Tennessee State Univ., Appalachian State Univ. and others. If I'm not mistaken he won a Pulitzer Prize for his photos of one of the big mine disasters in Eastern Kentucky a number of years back while a photographer for the Kingsport Times News. The bulk of his work is now in the Archives of Appalachia at the Carroll Reece Museum at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City Tennessee. |
