Is the stuff on YouTube legal? Or is it copyright infringement?

For example, a band plays a cover version of a famous song. Do they owe royalties?
Or, a band uses photographs found on the Web on Google to illustrate their song in a video. Is that an infringement on the photographer?
Half of what is seen on YouTube seems like borderline infringement.

There are far worse copyright-violating things on youtube than that. I think that stuff should be in the clear compared to the episodes and movies on youtube.

I do see videos taken off the website a lot, and they're all related to music. I assume it's because it's copyright infringement. I think it might just be the artist's discretion.

I believe there are many that do breach the copyright laws... and I heard that some company was suing over it.
