Why do churches prohibit flash photography? |
I am a photographer and on ocassion, I get asked to shoot at weddings and such. This weeked I had to shoot a wedding, but the priest did not allow flash photography inside. This is NOT a famous church, rather a small community temple, and this is NOT a well lit place. It has low stained glass windows all around (which burned when I exposed for the couple) and very orange tungsten lights... I was forced to use ISO1600 with my fastest (f/1.4) lens. I did OK, but I am wondering WHY DO SOME CHURCHES PROHIBIT FLASH??? Maybe a priest can help answer this... To avoid light damage on the paintings. Also, the flash disrupts the feeling many people get when being in a church. Source(s): Heaven holds a special place for those who pray. hey hey hey. Because a church is a sacred place.... There shouldn't be loud talking, or random flashes going off in church... A wedding is still condiered a mass ceremony, and flashes are disrespectful. I have never been to a wedding where they could use a flash... Its Church!!! Rules apply all the time, not just for certain things. I'm not a priest. But, it just makes sense to me. Flash disturbs the moment. It can even cause someone to forget what they're doing. Use your other equipment during the ceremony. Your flash for set up photography session after the ceremony. Some old school priests request the sactity of the temple to be respected. It makes sense to me. I've been to wedding where all you can see is the flashbulbs going and is so annoying,. it takes away from the moment. Good luck Because a lot of photographers are obnoxious and act like they're paparazzi during the ceremony. The flash detracts from the vows. Flash is distracting and intrusive. Clergy got tired of having the photograph's job of capturing the moment overtake the actual moment. And then of course, after the ceremony, we all have to stand around for an hour while the photographer gets everything. Sorry, but I've been to so many weddings where the photographer is the "guest of honor" and runs the event, while the guests are made to wait and wait and wait while he captures the couple's every breath. Churches prohibit flash photography because the flash will damage a lot of the art/paintings on the walls and around the interior of the church. They don't do it to sabotage you, they are just trying to keep the church looking its best. |
