Who are famous photographers who have "bent the rules"? |
I'm writing a paper and would like to use an example of a photographer who became well known because he/she "bent the rules" of photography in order to produce something that stands out. I definitely think you should examine the work of Robert Mapplethorpe. In addition to being a superior technician and an exceptionally emotive artist, his photography was socially provacative and demanded new answers from the establishment about the lines between obscenity and art as well as sexual and racial discrimination. Source(s): http://www.mapplethorpe.org/ I think the most famous would be Ansel Adams. His B/W photographs were so vivid they seemed to actually appear in color. Adams invented a method of exposure and development called the zone system, which he used to divide the various gradations of light in a scene into ten zones. These zones went all the way from black to white. With this method he showed photographers who used b/w photos to visualize the different levels of gray in the final photograph with tremendous accuracy. The control he achieved with this system enabled him to capture such subtle changes of tone and light that he could return time after time to the exact same scene and photograph scenes that were always a fresh new idea and never repetitive. Adams spent much of his time photographing national park scenes. If you ever get the time check out his photographs. I think you'd truly be amazed. All of them! Check out Ralph Gibson http://www.ralphgibson.com/gallery/... I'm sorry that you have been misled. There are no rules. Photographers have become famous for using the technology of photography for the conduit of their individual talent. "Rules" are restraints that are created by teachers that have little talent. If you stick to the artificial restraints, you can never stand out. |
