I want to be a fashion photographer, how do i do it?

I want to be a fashion photographer, how do i do it?

OK. You put on a dress. Take a camera. take a photo. print it out or get the film developed. look at it. and if you want to be a good fashion photographer. Take pictures of the OPPOSITE of that.

take "fashionable" pictures. if you don't know how to start by imitating the lighting, postures, backgrounds, etc. of fashion pictures you admire and then you will get a feel for how to do it

certain colleges/ seminars offer courses in fashion photography so start by looking for those in your area

It sounds really straightforward and obvious, but don't take it the wrong way: No one is ever going to offer you a job as a fashion photographer; it's something you're really going to have to go off and do on your own.

What I mean by that is, if you want to prove to people (design firms, magazines, and so forth) you have to take pictures. Ask friends to pose for you, scrounge up some funds and maybe hire a model or two (I used to pay people with bottles of wine, so think "compensation" not just "cash"). Heck, some people just want their name in the watermark (credit where credit's due) in lieu of compensation.

Equipment is a mixed bag. Obviously, you need a camera. At most, you may want to invest in a backdrop and a couple lights, unless you plan on using locations and/or relying on natural lighting conditions. The camera doesn't need to be anything overly expensive, at most it simply needs to look high-end and impressive (no one's going to let you photograph their wedding if you show up with a cameraphone and a shopping bag full of disposables). In any case, the camera should have some degree of manual control (which doesn't always have to be a DSLR, it can be an Advanced Point & Shoot like the Olympus SP series). Officially, you can make any camera work for you if you know how to stretch your capabilities or manipulate your circumstances.

Letting people see your work is the most crucial step. Websites are fine, but there's really no comparison to a plastic-and-paper portfolio that a client can flip through, or take home and peruse whilst kicking back on their sofa.
On the cyber-side of things, though:
Flickr and DeviantArt are really good places to show off your photography, especially DeviantArt due to its reputation.

As for finding the jobs: There's a book you can find at most high-end bookstores called "The 200X Market for Graphic Designers" (there's also one that's just for photographers) it comes out annually and lists submission guidelines for graphic design firms, art galleries, and some portrait studios.

Hmmm so you don't want to be famous this time... :)
If so cut out my final suggestion! Same answer as I put above then:

1. Study the basic principles of photography so you understand them inside out and can deconstruct other peoples technique... everything you learn will be built on this foundation so make sure it's as sound as possible.
2. Study the work of photographers you admire.
3. Seek out those photographers and see if you can visit them to ask questions about how they work, advice and mentoring.
4. Attend seminars by leading image makers - typically via professional associations such as the AoP (Association of Photographers).
5. Practice like hell!
6. Break the boundaries - experiment.
7. Develop a style of your own.
8. Get a good agent.
9. Don't nurture an 'image' for yourself - keep a low profile instead! :)

It's up to you whether you want to go down the study route - I'd recommend it, particularly if you can get into a leading university or college - it will also give you contacts for the future.

This free tutorial website should help with the basics anyway:

... the rest is up to you - I hope that helps, good luck!
