What is all this about fashion photographers being paid nothing?

I don't understand how fashion photographers (new ones) can be paid nothing for their work. I mean, aren't their expenses at least covered? Please explain this.

If the beginning fashion photographers are gullible enough to work for nothing, then the agency is not going to quibble. The more free work they can get the better for them (although for the big shoots they will not risk a good client by using an untested photographer ... free or not)

This is true.

Think about it, you're a newbie 'Tog. You have no real experience to think of, so you become an Assistant to a photographer. Some will pay you (not that huge amount of money), for others, simply to be able to say that you've worked assisted, say, Annie Leibovitz, will open doors in the future and people will happily work for free for these big names.

This is true with many photographers. It's not so much that they don't get paid. It's that they usually only make just enough to break even. Very rarely do they actually profit.

WTF thats wat i gonna do! yea plz ppl explain how this works??
