In college for a Business degree but i just don't know...? |
What i'm going to do with it when i get out. I love photography and fashion, i'm good at history, so far i took two accounting classes and i had an A in both of them, i don't know if i like marketing, i'm an artsy type of person but i'm also very family orientated. What jobs are out there that will allow me to obtain a middle class life style but also have time for my husband and children when i get married? What should i do with my degree? That is a very tough question and you should look for some guidance from your admissions/department adviser. No one knows what they want to do with their degree until they get out in the real world. Jobs will come and go in different fields and you may change direction a few times in your career. You are thinking way ahead of yourself though this is good. Accounting jobs can make good money down the road though are not extremely creative. Look to your finance and statistics (more creative) classes for some inspiration and ask your professors about some good job ideas. This may lead you to take some more electives that will interest you and enhance your degree/major/minor. My best advice to you is to get an internship during college and start to explore your interests. Your college job service should be able to help you find an interesting accounting or finance internship that pays ok. Get some real world experience and find what you like (or don't like) in a job. Internships will also really help you get a job right out of college, or lead to a direct offer from your internship company. Maybe go by the book store and find some interesting books on interesting career fields. Start reading and spark some ideas. Good luck! If you are an artsy type person, you would do better going into an artsy profession. Business, especially accounting requires a certain type of personality and artsy isn't it. I see a lot of unhappy accountants that should never have been accountants. You don't want to be stuck in a career path that you will not enjoy. I am good in art but I have absolutely no desire to become an artist. Getting a couple of A's in intermediate accounting is not what you should base your career choice on. Any university degree will practically guarentee you a middle class lifestyle. You should take course that really interest you for now. Why don't you get a degree in Advertising or work for an advertising agency. You will get to show some of your creative side, but also will have the business side. You can't go wrong with a degree in business, it's a very versitile degree. So I wouldn't change majors unless your really sure. Art galleries and clothing stores are businesses too. Try to get an internship for some real life experiences. And remember just because your very good at something that isn't your favorite thing to do, it could still give you exactly what your looking for. I'm an admin manager for a large construction co. It wasn't one of my "dream jobs" however I am very good at what i do, I'v earned alot of respect & I make enough money, and have the time to do all of the things that I want to do. So if your really good at accouting don't count it out. You could definatly make enough money in that career, and as far as family time goes it's a 40 hr wk job, except during tax season March - April. I recommend reading, "Now Discover Your Strengths." It helps you to focus on what comes naturally. |
