How can I improve my fashion photos?

I'm doing a series of photos on film this term in my photography class and I just wondered if anyone had any tips. They're shots of my friends outside!

What I do is research what the "big boys" are doing in the major magazines. Look at light direction, how much fill they are using and how the art director is having the models pose.

You can also look at the work successful photographers are publishing in the Black Book. Link below Source(s): http://www.blackbook.com
if you are showing off the clothes/person wearing them, make sure the background isn't too distracting. you want the photo to be interesting, but you want people to look at the clothes, not the background.

Becareful not to have anything in the background in a weird place...it's hysterical, i've seen people with telephone poles growing out of the top of their heads and trees growing out of all sorts of places...lol....oh and make sure you don't have too much background in the shots...you want the person/clothes to fill the frame.

Also, find the shot that best shows of each outfit...say the front of an outfit is really boring, but there is a lot of detail in the back....maybe a shot from the back with the person looking over their shoulder...really think about each outfit and shoot from different angles in different positions.

If these pictures are to be displayed together or done as a set, you might want to come up with a theme of some sorts....think of how they do big fashion shoots. the photos might all be at the beach or on the streets in NY or maybe everyone has the same prop...or the lighting is all done the same, or they are all shot from the same angle....grab some magazines with photo spreads in them and flip through them....there is always something that ties the grouping of pictures together.

If you have access to a digital camera, they can be handy to do a "test shot" if you aren't sure about a certain pose or background, snap a shot with the digital and then you can look it over quick and see if you can find any problems or what you really think of the idea.
A photo class and lots of practice taking all kinds of pics...
Have one hell of a stylist, if your doing fashion photography your styling and makeup has to be on point. Thats what makes the image the styling and also the photographer.
Good Luck
