Question on Canon Eos Rebel xti 400d? LCD display issue?

I just received this camera as a gift before I begin a photography class so I'm very new to SLR cameras.

When I turn the camera on the LCD display is a greyish menu only, not an image. I can't get rid of the grey menu. Also, nothing selects on the menu it is simply a stationary screen.

I CAN take a photo and the two second review image flashes in the LCD but then it just returns to the grey screen.

My battery us charged, the memory card is inserted correctly and I swear I have read the instruction guide about 4 times.

Help! I don't want to break my new camera.

hi....
congratulations ....u have a DSLR camera ..... in this professional type of cameras there's no live preview on the lcd ((i mean u wont be able to c a view of what u want to shoot before shooting))....SO...what's the purpose of the lcd????
it's here for displaying ur setting ((coz u have to check alot of setting b4 shooting))..and to review ur photos after shooting ..... i think u have to check this link:

it will help understand the dslr camera u have......good luck.
Good answer Photo.

It has been so long since I first turned on a new digital SLR, I don't know if there are things that need to be setup before the camera is used or not. I think my two came ready to go with default settings.

Re-pushing the "Menu" button should get rid of the menu screen and once some images have been captured, the display button (Disp.) should show the images on the LCD.

Two equally good answers, the EOS was designed this way to save power when on a shoot, you can make changes to the preview time by resetting it in the "menu" but remember the longer you look at your photos on the screen the less power you will have when taking photos, not a great problem if you are near a power supply but fatal if you are not.
Extra batteries or a power grip is the answer here, i always carry at least 2 spare batteries, a car charger cord is also a good idea.
