Low light photography - ebay auction pics?

I need help with taking pics of my antiques for my ebay auction. I don't want to use the internal flash , but I can't seem to get my indirect lighing right. My photos always have uneven light. I don'thave any equipment other than my h-p dig. camera . any suggestions

Just take your stuff outside and use sunlight.
You can built an inexpensive light tent, with only assembly required. Check out the plans here:

Instead of cementing anything together, I left it all uncemented so I could change the size and make it more portable.

Also, depending on the brightness of the light you might need to increase your exposure compensation a little to brighten the image. This should give you the even lighting you are looking for.

Post an example for more specific answers. It sounds like you don't want to spend a lot. You need diffuse light, and symmetrical. I would buy two cheap light stands, and very strong bulbs. Buy some of that white foam board, maybe a few sheets. You can use duct tape to tape them together in a "T" shape and they will stand up. Now point the lights at your homemade reflectors. Have one light and one reflector on each side. This should provide pretty good, even illumination. One more note, if you have something like a bright window in the scene, your camera (in auto mode) will make the overall scene darker to average out the light. Cover any non-needed light sources, or increase the exposure meter on your camera to get a brighter shot.
If all else fails, set up a table outdoors and take the pictures there. The light is a lot more even and of better quality. Select the time of day and angle to get the lighting effects that you want. Make sure the white balance is at the same setting as the light you are using.

You can also diffuse artificial light by passing it through a translucent screen. Start layering cheesecloth on a frame until you get the effect you want. If this results in really long exposures be sure that you have the camera on a tripod.

Get a flash that will work with your camera and that has a swivel head. Bounce the light off the ceiling.
