My cat had her first litter of kittens tonight, however, she appears to be attempting to eat them...? |
Our one year old cat had her kittens tonight, 4/28 at around 9 pm est. She for several hours licked the kittens, resituated numerous times for their convinience, and even hissed when we took flash photography (I know that probably wasn't the best thing for us to do). However, she has in the last few hours began to bite at her kittens as if she's trying to eat them, before we stop her with a verbal scolding. Is there anything we can do, should do, or is this just natural selection-or, possibly are we just misreading her actions for something completely different? She is, it appears, trying to bite at only one. Also, any other tips for us, as the human parents, regarding the young kittens would be appreciated greatly. We keep recieving mixed 'facts' about whether or not we should handle the kittens within the next week. Thanks for any feedback If she is biting only one kitten, it may be that she knows that it is defective and she is instinctively trying to kill it. Cats will kill or abandon a defective kitten to conserve her milk for the healthy kittens. She's a young mother -- is this her first litter? Sometimes first-time mothers are pretty inept. The fact that she keeps moving her kittens to new locations indicates that she feels stressed. Provide her with a dark place such as a closet or a large box on its side, in a part of the house where she won't be dusturbed, and leave her alone for a day or so except to put food and water nearby. I'd recommend you not handle the kittens till their eyes open. By then the mother should have settled down and gotten her confidence back. Source(s): I work at a vet hospital call a vet they should have one in your area that is open 24-7 for emergencies. You might want to examine the kitten very good...see if it in distress...it may be a weak one...sometimes the mother will push it to the side and I have heard of them killing the weaker one...just watch her very close...maybe all the attention going on...She needs it quite so she can concentrate on her new babies and taking care of them...save the picture taking for a few days...if she doesn't began to take care of the baby you might want to take it out and bottle feed it yourself...but I would do that as a last resort...As I said...quite is what she needs right now...so just watch her close and see what happens...We have spent many sleepless nights watching newborns and moms...just in case she needed help...She should have the hang of things by morning...Good luck! Just a Crazy Pet Lover You should let her have her peace with the kittens. don't forget mommy instinct is to protect their young. I think with the flash photos, mommy may think you are going to take away or harm the kittens, so her instinct is to try to find other quieter place to hide them. Maybe that's why she is trying to put in the mouth to protect or trying to eat little kitty, why not give your mommy kitty a rest and peace and quiet for a while and only visit for the food or change of litter and make sure Congratualation and Good luck...!! You need to LEAVE HER ALONE for SEVERAL DAYS!!! DON'T HANDLE THE KITTENS...wait till they are ready to come out when their eyes are open etc....PLEASE LEAVE THEM ALONE for now....or you will have dire circumstances...momma cats and kittens need to be left alone for a good while or you will have problems.....Good Luck. Mama cat could be severing the umbilical cord on her kittens. |
