Photography lighting - puppy indoors?

Just started playing with a camera. newbie.. D40Nikon.. I have a friend who does puppy classes and I want to take photos afterwards and sell photos to help support this crazy photography habit.. yeah., i know. it all starts here.

shooting will be indoors. flourescent lighting mostly. warehouse/shop style area. 10' ceilings.

I prefer constant lighting.. but if get right setup., and it's consistent, i'm ok with flash.

question: better to do inexpensive kit found online .. with two 5,000 lumen lamps with umbrellas on stands.. or one flash bracket assembly thingy just off side of camera.?

If helps.. I'm planning on building a portable platform and backdrop.. for pets to sit/lay on while taking photos.

HELP!

I've thought of worklight and change to white light.. but it doesn't look as professional.. i want to have a semi-prof. look to this.

hope the pups are well trained... animals are harder to shoot than you think.

try no flash at first, since big lights popping off DO seem to distract the beasties ; )
If you get the lamps, also look into a 'bounce'. It will keep the dogs looking like demonic hell hounds from the all deep shadows.
If you need a fill flash, think about a good Nikon flash unit. Like the SB600, or the more expensive SB800.
First shooting dogs and puppies are like shooting children except the dogs listen a little better. First I would suggest that you use an inexpensive studio light set and I will include the link for you to look at it. I have a set of these (along with other more powerful) but for your purposes this is not expensive and it will serve your needs and everything is included to shoot. The only problem you may have using a Nikon D40 is there is no "PC" connection (the ability to connect a cable to the flash system). You can use another flash to fire your main lights but put it on the lowest setting so it does not effect your pictures. If you have a dedicated Nikon flash turn the head backwards towards your flash heads and use it that way.

You will have to check your cameras manual to see what the highest shutter speed you can shoot at to sync with these lights (it will be lower than 1/250 or even 1/125 if you get a "BIG" black line cutting into your pictures lower your shutter speed till it goes away).

Also have the owner stand near you for portraits since the dog will look at their owner, if you want side shots do the same thing have the owner to the left or right side of the animal.

Hope this helps you, and if you have any other questions ask.
