How can I make high speed flash on my own for bird photography giving 1/5000 sec. duration & F11 at 10'?

how can I make high speed electronic flash on my own for bird photography giving 1/5000 sec. duration & F11 at 10 feet distance.small portablle flashes have speed but not power.pl suggest any article and part supply source.it should be batt operated.

The biggest problem you will encounter is not findinga flash with ultra short duration, but a camera that will sync with it. Normal flash sync on an SLR tops out at about 1/500th ofa sec, only found on a few high level digital and film SLRs. Most TLR and in lens shutter cameras will sync to 1/1000th or the highest shutter speed. A focal plane shutter sync in a SLR will allow flash to the highest shutter speed availible, BUT itis not a true flash sync. FP or HSS operates by timing a blasting flash while the first and second curtains are running, effectively pulsing and simulating ambient light. A powerful auto-thyristor flash such as a Sunpak 611 could give you very short durations depending on distance to subject. For birding I would think that a more powerful NON automatic strobe such as an Alien Bee would work better, in the link to sportshooter below Paul C. Buff explains that his flashes shortest durations are at full power, the opposite of what most thyristors are in manual mode. The listed duration of the alien bee 1600 is 1/1600th of a sec...pretty fast. I own and use alienbees and I can attest to their quality, but not their usefulness for highspeed photography. no clue. ask someone at the place where you bought your camera from. Photographing birds is hard but if you get a good picture its worth it.
since you did not mention exactly how you are trying to photograph birds, I relay my setup for shooting Hummingbirds. You are right small portable flashes will not have the power you are looking for. You have to get to the bigger professional rigs.

I use 2 Photogenic StudioMax III 110V/12V Studio flash mounted on light stands. These work with batteries from Quantum. I go with 2 of them in a my back yard. They have the power (320ws) to light up a large area and I have used them to freeze hummingbird wings in flight. I use a radio remote slave system to trigger the flashes.

For more remote locations where I have to backpack everything in, I use 2 Metz 60ct on small light stands. These can also be connected to the Quantum battery for faster recharge.

Check with B&H Photography & Video for both setups.

You can't sync at 1/5000 with either setup, but at 1/250 and 1/500 should do anything that I have ever needed to capture.

The only other way is to buy a high speed 35mm movie camera and have it sync'ed to a strobe light. That is how they freeze bullets in flight. High speed cameras are not exactally portable,

For high speed strobes check with DJ and Stage lighting suppliers. Guitar Center is a good place to start. None of these are battery powered.
