Why does flash photography affect old buildings, such as churches etc?

I remember going on holiday once to minorca, and there was a old beautiful little church kinda place, full of colour, but i think through time the colour has started to fade,
but we were only allowed to take pictures with the flash off the cameras,
i just cant understand why the flash affects it in any way.

Thanks to anyone who has the answers,
xx

I am not 100% sure but I guess the theory is that if everyone took photo's with their flash on, the light produced from this would cause the building to fade.....

What am I talking about. I like to theorise so I don't think that the above is a good answer. Sorry....
It will fade old stained windows, old materials and robes, old paintings that have been around for hundreds of years.
It's nothing to do with colours fading - it's because worshippers in a church don't want to see flashes going off all the time whilst they are in prayer ! ! !
Consider for a moment, going to your favourite old pub or cafe or whatever place you feel comfortable, sitting down and having a morning meal. And while reading your paper someone comes by and snaps a flash photo of your dining area, your eyes are distracted but quickly go back to the paper.

then another flash, then another

You try to have a conversation with a friend but every few moments another person walks by and snaps a picture.

Taking photographs of the place is something of a privledge. The owners want people to be able to record their memories of fantastic, older sights. But at the same time they want respect to be given to those that live in the area and use the old churches and such.

So in closing, its not that the flash damages the buildings per-se, but rather that they want tourists to make as little disruption as possible when passing though, including making sudden, bright flashes of light. =)
There are two official reasons for this, but one of them is not that good.

(1) Your flash distracts and annoys other vistors contemplating the quiet beauty of the church (a good reason).

(2) The flash is so bright that it can fade delicate fabrics in the church (this doesn't stack up -- the flash is bright, but it is also very brief).

But there is also a good artistic reason. You will get much better pictures without the flash, as long as you take the trouble to position the camera so that it cannot move, and it can cope with making exposures lasting a second or so. You will see the whole space fully illuminated, not just the bit near your camera, and features such as stained glass will appear in their true colours.

If there was no one IN it, it's not because it'd annoy people.

If you were to take a picture in a theatre (With a stage, not for movies), your picture wouldn't come out. Why? The stage is designed and shaped in such a way that would direct light towards the back of the stage than it would to the front (Your flash wouldn't bounce back to develop anyway).

Not to mention that flash is pretty much useless for a large building anyway, since you'll always have dark spots.

Flash may also cause you to have sharp reflections off the paint or the outer coating of the building (Depending on what it is), causing a poor picture anyway.
