Fuji Finepix 3800 question for other 3800 owners?

I just got a Fuji FinePix 3800 camera used and it doesn't have an xD picture card.
I don't have any other xD Picture card devices, and I would like to make sure this camera is good before plunking down cash for a xD Picture card (yes, I'm being cheap).
Here's the question:
Will the camera do anything "camera" related, like display a live picture out the viewfinder without the memory card?
This camera shuts itself off when you move the selector to "camera" mode. Is this normal behavior?
In "display" mode it won't do a whole lot except display "! No Card" and let me look at some of the "menu" functions.
Just trying to figure out if its worth buying a memory card or I should get my money back while I can.

That is the problem with "odd ball" cards such as that. If it used a CF or SD you could find plenty of people with cards for you to try. Maybe you can find someone with a Fuji that will let you try it with their card.

That camera has no built in memory, so you will not be able to do anything with it without a card inserted.

Turns out the camera was defective. Even with the memory card in, it would shut itself off when switched to "camera" mode.
I took both the camera and the memory card back to the respective stores I bought them from. Report It
