I still need a camcorder?

Ok...I know i've already asked for some advice, but I can't get any decent answers from any retailers (rex, radio shack, wal-mart, etc.)

If i get a Mini-DV camcorder that records on tape - is there anyway i can view the movies other than through my tv? The dude at REX said the only way is to put the tape back into the camcorder and then plug it in to your tv. Is this true?

The answerer from my prior question immediately ruled out DVD camcorders, so unless you know something that he didn't, please share.

I'm interested in a Hard Disk Drive camera (JVC Everio MG155) as well - but not sure whether I should go for this or the Mini-DV. Please help - my baby is due anytime now and I don't want to miss a moment!!

I'm looking for good video and sound quality. Please give as much detail as you can.

that's great the mini-dv are better quality, but what are the ways that i can playback the tapes? i really need to know this before I decide on either format

Video quality from miniDV tape would be one of the best specially if the intention is to edit the video also, which may prove difficult for DVDs.
But being a father too, I suppose you'll be rather busy when your little one comes... and you're practically right, HDD may be the better choice.
Maybe the reviews and cost parameters in this link might help: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/d/Reviews&l...

Capture miniDV video: attach vcam to pc via firewire, open video editing app,e.g., XP movie maker and burn to dvd Report It

ust repeating some prior info i just gave but still very relevant to you.

there are a couple of considerations when looking at cameras.

first, look at budget and then work out the best you can get for the money spent. try to steer clear of second hand units as they are usually more trouble than they're worth.

second, decide on a format to suit your style. most people are getting Hard drive cameras without thinking of the implications of the design. i will keep using mini dv tape myself until the bitter end as i think they are still the best format for low budget film making. you can use them in many HD cameras and will offer better archival storage and far superior image quality compared to DVD and HDD.

go with mini dv - you can't miss.

third - what sort of shooting are you looking to do? indoor studio? or outdoor sporting events etc. many cameras are good for one but might be lacking for the other. try to find something that suits your needs and work out features you may find useful. eg - night vision sounds great but it's highly unlikely that you'll use it regularly. but if you found something with decent mic inputs and separate sound controls you may find that FAR more useful.

consider you applications, decide your format and look at how much you want to spend. make a short list then try them out.

good luck to you.

PS - for the record, I use a sony hvr-v1p. it is an amazing cam and looks as good as super 16mm film.
