What to do when you get painters block? |
a little like my writers, and even photography block. What about your paintings gave you satisfaction? Was it just the praise of others? You need to figure out first why you liked painting.. then decide if that alone is worth continuing.. If your looking for inspiration then try traveling a little, get involved in activities out side of painting or art and incorporate those things into your art work... Painting can give you a sense of escape or happiness when you see what you made you just have to remember why it was you painted It becomes work. It happens. You prabably are having a block because your not sure what ypur painting for. Are you going to sell them, or try to sell them? Very frustrating I am in the same position. I was gun ho a month ago and now I can't get started. I am having trouble knowing why I should if I struggle to make money from my work. turn off the T V and listen to the music painting helps me relax...i love to paint with acrylic and oil. Sometime i get a painter's block but only for a week or two. If i lay my painting in front of me for day on end, i eventually go back to them and change/add things to them. Use different techniques than want you normally use or combine your techniques and other techniques to see what you like. Just experiment with it. I typically never have this problem because my paintings are inspired by the people I have known and dreams. Basically I think about someone and then I get an image in my head and then paint it. You could try this, i think it works really well. You could also try painting or drawing things in your life. Painting is like travel. Some do it for the journey, some for the destination. When I am in a funk and don't know why I am not inspired, the first thing I do is clean up the mess in my studio. I usually run across something than gives me an urge to use it, it may be a type or color of paint, it may be a piece of equipment or a type of paper (support). If that still doesn't work, I sit down and turn on the music and start leafing through books and magazines until it hits me! Wow, I could do something like that only better!! I took a year off to develop my "eye" & pursue other interests. When I got back into it, I found my stuff to be higher quality & more enjoyable. "Forcing it" was just NOT productive! |
