I'm torn which DSLR to buy. Nikon D50 or Canon EOS 400d?

Been wanting a DSLR for so long, and I want to start learning photography after I get myself a DSLR. I usually shoot landscapes and inanimate objects (at times macro shooting), can you also recommend which lenses to buy? My budget's like $1000 or less if possible.

My wife has the D50 and it's a great camera. It's "only" 6 MP compared to the 400d's 10 MP, though, but I still think I'd prefer the Nikon, just for the feel. The problem is, unless you have a line on one in a store, you might not be able to buy one any longer.

I just posted a comparison between the D40x and 400D (XTi), so I may as well let you read it as well.

Boy, this is a question I was hoping would wait a while... The D40X is so new that I don't see any decent sample images yet. Can we assume (hope) that it would give similar results to the D80? It seems so. See: http://www.popphoto.com/cameras/3896/cam... for a glowing review that even compares it with the XTi just a little bit.

I still like the idea that the Nikon has a spot meter and find it odd that the Canon doesn't. The Nikon is a bit limited in autofocus capabilities and speed compared to the Canon, though.

Here are some pertinent quotes about the D40X:

"Noise suppression was generally better than the D80's and much better than the Rebel's. As ISOs increased, the D40x's resolution exceeded that of the Rebel."

"The economy-model status of the D40x doesn't show in picture quality, either. At ISO 100, the D40x turned in an average resolution of 2075 lines, slightly behind the Nikon D80 and Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi."

Continue on down on page 2 for a direct comparison to the XTi. I'll let you read it for yourself, as it seems to lean slightly towards the Canon and it would kill me to write that. I'll leave that job for Koko.

But seriously, these cameras are EXTREMELY close in performance and value. It is true that there is a "problem" with older Nikon lenses not autofocusing on the D40, but if you do not own a bag full of older lenses, it is not going to be a problem.

You need to go to a real camera store and pick up both cameras and see how they feel to you. Some people will love the Canon and some will love the Nikon. Find out which one you are. You will be happy with either one, but you will be happiest with the one that fits your hands better.

Personally I have a Nikon D50, I love it!
my hands are very small and when I hold the canons is a little big for me.
My D50 takes amazing photos, they are sharp and quick and its just a winner. I can't say enough good things about it.
On the other hand my stepmom has a canon and its not bad but after shoting mine and her's; I can tell that her's(the canon) is slower.
Just one more thing about the D50; Nikon has stopped making them; so if you don't shake your butt and get one soon you might be out of luck.
Something I don't think you should get is the D40....... you can only use auto-focus lens on that camera. Its a pain.
If you plan on getting into the hobby, another thing to think about is that Nikon has some of the best lens on the market and you can use the D50 with all of them.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck with it. I dont' think my life would be as colorful it I wasn't a photographer.

Take a look at http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech.htm... for some input.

Happy shooting.
This might not be a big deal if you use a tripod, but I find the 400D much too small to hold comfortably. The grip is too short and not nearly thick enough.

Unfortunately the D50 is history and its replacements (the D40 and D40X) are also child-sized.

So if you want a camera with a real, grown-up grip, you'll have to go used or more expensive.

Hope this helps.
