What is your opinion of the Nikon D40x camera?

I'm thinking about purchasing one. Ritz Camera is offering a 2 lens kit right now with Nikon 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor Lens and Nikon 55-200 mm F/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Lens. Are these decent lenses for the price (the whole kit is $1000)? I am new to photography and have outgrown 2 different point and shoot cameras in 4 years. I like the quick start up and 3 fps continuous shoot. I love to shoot my kids, but also enjoy landscape and wildlife. I like to zoom in as much as I can.

You should go down to your camera store and try one out before you buy. The D40X is a very small camera -- you may find it uncomfortable to hold. Grab it and the D80 and see which one fits your grip.

Another issue is lens compatibility. D40X requires you to use AF-S lenses (the kind with focus motor in the lens). You won't get autofocus with any of the dozens of Nikon lenses without this feature.

This takes you out of the running for many lenses you may eventually want (and which can be had used for good prices).

Finally, in its quest for compactness, Nikon has eliminated the information window on top of the camera.

You may not miss this, but as a D50 owner I wouldn't buy a camera without one. Again, the D80 has this feature so go compare.

As for lenses, the 18-70 gives you more at the long end at a faster aperture, so I'd go for that instead of the kit.

The 55-200 doesn't get great reviews, but you may be stuck with it as there's nothing else to choose. (With the D80 you'd have more choice.)

Whatever you end up getting, I'm sure you'll be very happy as it's all great gear.
It is a logical move from point and shoot cameras. You will find it will give you more satisfying control over your images.

Have fun and shoot like a wild person. Film is cheap! That camera and those lenses should keep you busy for many years.
It would be a good choice if it is one of the last cameras you will get and if it will last
I think you will be very pleased with it. I own a d70 and a d50 and two lenses -an 18-200 and a 70 - 300 zooms and I am very happy with them. The d40x has more advanced features than my two cameras so I have no doubt that you will be happy too. The price that you qouted is very good but if you can afford it just buy the d40x body and then go for an 18 -200 VR lens. It will cover the range of the two lenses that are being offered and then you have vr (vibration reduction) as well.
I got the same exact thing too. It's a great start for begginers. The lenses are great for shooting sports because they focus slower than most, but taking picktures of landscape and wildlife are great. Look at these: http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n280/...

No photoshop was done for either of them. Taking pictures of childeren is also good except it's better to take it outdoors, because the flash can get very annoying.
