Canon Rebel xti? |
I recently bought a new camera, and I'm fairly new to photography. On the dial, there are several settings such as portrait, landscape, & close-up. I understand those, but there are others (P, Tv, Av, M, and A-Dep) which I don't really understand. Could anyone tell me, or direct me to a site that would show me what they mean? Thanks if you can -Eve A booklet came with your camera and those settings are explained. Once you look in the booklet and you want to know more, spell out what is abbreviated + photography in your favorite search engine. (Perchance is Yahoo.com your favorite, too?) I highly recommend you take a beginers photography class at your local community college. you will be glad you did. Those settings you don't understand are the difference between a crappy camera that takes crappy pictures and a fully manual machine in which you control everything. You need to learn about apertures and shutter speeds. It is unfortunately too much to explain in a blog. Take a class or at least read a book. and discover what your camera is capable of, if you don't, then you shouldn't have such an expensive camera. P=Program, the camera does the thinking. Not a good choice really. Tv=Shutter priority: You choose the shutter speed and the camera will set the aperture. Shutter speed controls movement: if you want to freeze motion, you need to set it to at least 125, if you want to show motion 1/15 or slower. Use a tripod if you are shooting at less than 1/125. Av=Aperture priority: You choose the aperture and the camera sets the shutter speed. Aperture controls depth of field, ie, how much appears to be in focus. If you want to isolate the subject and have the background soft, use a low number such as 2.8, 4, 5.6. If you want everything in acceptable focus, use 11, 16 or 22. M=Manual You use the light meter and set both. This is the mode I use most often, but when I first started out I tended to use Tv or Av, until i learned to meter properly. A-Dep: Aperture Depth of Field, You tell the camera how much depth of field, and it figures out the aperture and shutter speed. I never had much success with this setting, although I didn't see much use for it. Use Av to control depth of field. I highly recommend you read some books on the subject. Henry Horenstien writes excellent books on basic photography. Amazon.com is your friend here. Also, the Kodak Pocket guide to 35 mm photography is the BEST book ever written on the subject. It covers everything you need to know, and, duh, fits in your pocket!!!! You can ignore the film info, but all the rest (aperture control, shutter speed, filters, ect.) is still true. The manual is your friend. Read it. I carry mine in my bag and refer to it regularly, despite the fact I've been doing this for over 40 years. Have fun and keep shooting. MFA Photography, Photo Instructor, Pro Photog 1st check the camera user guide - Xti has a very good one. 2nd If you don't know what is Aperture priority mode because you don't know what the Aperture means : go a check a photography book at your local library. There is an excellent site at the Canon Digital Learning Center will you will be able to take free online tutorials that answer all of these questions and more.
