I want to start a photography business.......? |
would the nikon d70 be sufficient and if not would the photoshop cs2 take up the slack....I'm interested in portraits but the passion is for more of an art style business...i.e. landscapes, sunsets, stuff that looks good on calendars and puzzles....any info would be appreciated. The D70s would be okay (I own one.) but the D80 would be much better for the work you have described. Besides being a 10 MP camera rather than 6 MP, it has an updated processing engine and produces great colors. I also own a D200, to which the D80 has been compared, and I like the colors better than in my D70s. You will also want a good lens, most like a great wide angle lens for the landscapes and sunsets. This can get really costly, if you want to go first class. Check out http://www.kenrockwell.com fro reviews and recommendations about all kind of Nikon lenses and equipment. He really likes the 12-24 mm f/4 lens, but it's a $1,000 investment... I have the "hot" lens these days - the 18-200 VR lens. This is great for sunsets, because of the vibration reduction. They are about $700, if you can find one. They do have some minor distortion at some focal lengths, although the 24-28 range is excellent. It is easy enough to correct for the distortion, if you are going to need really critical perfection, in CS2, though. I can even do it in Photoshop Elements. The D70 might be a bit low on mega-pixels. It will make beautiful 8x10 inch prints, and you can always up-res in Photoshop with bicubic smoothing (or even better, with the Genuine Fractals plug-in for Photoshop) but there are limits to what this will achieve. If you want to print considerably larger, the Nikon D80 makes a lot of sense. (If you want to make poster size prints of your landscapes, upgrade to a medium/ large format system.) As for lenses, I can second the Nikon 12-24 ($920 retail) for landscapes. And the Nikon 17-35 ($1500 retail) is a legendary landscape lens. For portraits, the 85 f/1.4 ($1000 retail) is fantastic. These are some of the best lenses by any brand. So if you ever win the lottery... |
